Framestore at CinemaCon

From A-list actors to studio powerplayers, Hollywood was out in force for this year’s CinemaCon - a key event showcasing new projects to the people responsible for getting films onto the big screen.

Films featuring Framestore’s work were among those generating the most buzz, running the gamut from superhero adventures to indie horror, thoughtful sci-fi and high-octane drama. Between them the projects draw on the skill, creativity and expertise of our Art DepartmentPre-production Services team and VisDev specialists, as well as our talented animators and VFX artists in London, Montreal, Melbourne and Mumbai.

While we can’t talk about all the CinemaCon projects we’re working on, here’s a snapshot showcasing some of the event’s most talked-about titles…

How To Train Your Dragon

Audiences were charmed and awed by Dean DeBlois’ live-action adaptation of his animated classic, treating the film to a rare mid-film ovation for its iconic ‘test drive’ sequence. You can read more about audience responses to the film, which was led by Production VFX Supervisor Christian Manzhere

F1

Director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer treated audiences to the first ten minutes of their heartpounding actioner, with Variety saying that “the immersive race footage has the same ‘you are there feeling that made Top Gun: Maverick, with its gripping, sweat-inducing aerial sequences, such as phenomenon.” The film was led by Production VFX Supervisor Ryan Tudhope.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

New footage of Marvel’s ‘first family’ was screened exclusively for CinemaCon attendees, featuring both a well-received villain reveal and an intriguing new plot twist…

Project Hail Mary

Framestore last worked with Ryan Gosling when he was putting in a star turn as Barbie’s arm candy, and now we find him in a very different role: a science teacher who becomes a reluctant astronaut with a mission to save the world. No biggie, right?

Three Bags Full

Hugh Jackman and Emma Thompson introduced a baaaa-rilliant slice of ovine whodunnitry, with a sneak peek at Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie, which is directed by Kyle Balda and scripted by Craig Mazin. Graham Page serves as the film’s Production VFX Supervisor.

Thunderbolts*

We’re now weeks away from the film’s release, but the MCU’s unlikliest team of heroes couldn’t resist making a splash at CinemaCon with five minutes of footage that The Hollywood Reporter described as ‘electric’. Star Florence Pugh hailed the film’s crew as “our new team of glorious misfits,” and we’re sure our artists, producers and technologists feel honoured to be part of that gang.

Together

Having been acquired by NEON since its rapturous reception at Sundance, horror fans are on tenterhooks to see more of this squirm-inducing horror from first-time director Michael Shanks…

Wicked: For Good

Wicked was one of the biggest films of 2024, and Framestore was delighted to be part of the magic. Director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt were joined by stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo to showcase a very first look at the film, and by all accounts the CinemaCon audience were rapt - “they went nuts for it,” according to Deadline.
