Befores&Afters X Cosmo

Monday 12 June 2023

Befores and Afters speak to Visual Effects Supervisor, Stephanie Naze to discover the process behind Framestore's 100% CG 'spacedog' Cosmo, created for the final instalment of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. The team built Cosmo - complete with a spacesuit and speaker device - to be a photoreal creature, based on an on-set reference of a real dog called Slate. Naze details how the team at Framestore developed the character from the early tests to the final version and the challenge of making Cosmo as realistically dog-like in her expressions as possible, without losing the performance of the actress, Maria Bakalova, nor the individual spirit of the character. The article explores how the team tackled the challenges of creating Cosmo's fur and costume, and struck a balance between the inventiveness needed to portray a talking dog in a spacesuit and being as realistic as possible to do so convincingly.
