2025 Academy Award Nomination
Framestore Creative Director and VFX Supervisor Jonathan Fawkner secured his fourth Academy Award nomination in the Visual Effects category for his work on Broadway blockbuster Wicked. Our studios sprinkled their VFX magic on the 2024’s biggest cinematic phenomenon, crafting note-perfect CG characters and working hand-in-glove with the film’s practical craftspeople to amplify and augment the show-stopping sense of magic. As well as VFX and animation, the film made use of Framestore’s in-house art department and FPS (Framestore Pre-production Services) - the latter previsualising key scenes like the iconic Defying Gravity sequence.
Fawkner's previous Academy Award nominations celebrate the breadth of VFX work that Framestore has to offer, creating out of this world environments and creatures for Guardians of the Galaxy, invisible stunt and environment augmentation in 007 thriller No Time To Die, and now director Jon M. Chu's Ozmopolitan fantasy. The first of two parts, Wicked: For Good is slated to fly onto the big screen in November 2025.
Other Framestore films that received an invitation to the Academy Awards VFX Bake-off this year include Deadpool & Wolverine, Gladiator II and Civil War.
Fiona Walkinshaw, Framestore’s Chief Executive Officer, Film & Episodic, said: “Having our filmmaking peers and partners recognising the craft, creativity and innovation of our team like this is an amazing way to start the year. Jonathan and his team really pulled out all the stops when it came to conjuring the magic of Shiz University, so a huge congratulations to every single artist, producer and technologist who helped breathe life into Wicked and craft the film's gravity-defying VFX.”
