VES 2018 award win
Framestore is pleased to announce that our work on the ‘Groot Dance/Opening Fight’, opening sequence to Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, has received global recognition in winning the Visual Effects Society (VES) Award for Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a Photoreal Project.
The award was presented to Alvise Avati (Lead Animator) and Robert Stipp (Lighting Technical Director) of Framestore, and our collaborators James Baker (Previs/Postvis Supervisor) and Steven Lo (Previs Lead) of THE THIRD FLOOR.
For Framestore, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a creative and technical challenge of epic proportion, with the opening sequence marking a stand-out piece of work. A one-shot number with no camera cuts, the team was faced with 800 frame-long effects and the need to run simulations that were thousands of frames long - alongside animating camera moves and a host of CG characters, including Baby Groot and the eight-tentacled Abilisk.
'It was such an important scene to get right; it has a lot of heart in it, and it meant so much to James Gunn', says Arslan Elver, Animation Supervisor. Congratulations to the talented team who contributed to this film.
