1899 Arrives on Netflix

We're thrilled to have worked on the highly anticipated show 1899, the new series from Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar who brought us DARK. The eight episodes follow a migrant steamship heading west to leave the old continent. The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea. What they will find on board, will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare?

Framestore was intimately involved in all aspects of the project, with Christian Kaestner, overall VFX Supervisor, leading our integrated visualisation, virtual production, and VFX teams. Filming took place in the largest LED "Volume" virtual production stage in Europe, operated by the production company Dark Bay.
