This project was completed by Atomic Fiction for Method Studios in 2016. Method’s film and episodic teams in Montreal, Vancouver and Melbourne are now a fully-integrated part of Framestore.
In classic Zemeckis style, this WWII story of two assassins who fall in love is deliberately paced and uses visual effects to support the story at nearly every point, with 776 of its 954 shots containing VFX. The creative studio handled half of those shots, creating anti-aircraft for a sequence where German bombers make a run (and spectacular crash), a detailed 3D environment to re-create Casablanca, a large desert environment and sandstorm for a key love sequence, rain in the final act, and more. To populate the airfield-based scenes artists scanned the hero Lysander along with a Lancaster bomber and dozens of period vehicles and munitions. Purpose-built Katana templates were built to randomise aircraft tail numbers, propeller rotations and other decals at render time.
